Engineering and Maths in Rang a Sé

Our challenge was to work in teams to build a free-standing, multi-story structure using only tooth-picks and marshmallows. The structure would have to be able to withstand the ‘earthquake’ test which involves shaking the table it stands on for 15 seconds.

We had to consider factors such as gravity, force, symmetry, height and weight. Each structure was first mapped out as a blueprint. Then, we built our structures and assessed them for stability, durability and height.

We then reviewed our structures, re-drafted our blueprints and rebuilt or modified our structures based on the changes we felt needed to be made.

We are happy to report that all of the structures survived the ‘earthquake’ test. Our winning team produced a sound structure measuring an impressive 21cm in height.
