6th Class Basketball

Over the past week, the 6th class boys and girls basketball teams competed in two away games as part of the Cuman na mBunscol schools competition. Lucky enough the first game was a very short journey across the road to Gaelscoil Cill Dara.

The nerves were high for the first outing but both the boys and girls team put up a good fight. Gaelscoil Cill Dara had two very strong teams on the day and unfortunately both teams lost their opening game. However, N.E.T.N.S learnt a lot from this game and took a lot of positives from it and focused on the next game against Castledermot. Thanks to the 6th class boys and girls who came along to support their classmates.

On Monday both teams traveled to Castledermot to play Scoil Diarmada. There was a risk of rain that morning but thankfully the rain held off for both games that were held outdoors. The teams got into an early warm up and the girls played first.

The girls looked very strong and certainly the nerves were non existent compared to the first game. The girls looked confident as they pulled away with a lead coming out of the first quarter with 4 points to 0 which was helped with lots steals from great defense and fast breaks.

In the second quarter another set of 5 girls made their way to the court and again N.E.T.N.S looked strong as they made a lot of steals, had great passes and rebounding. Team Scoil Diarmada could not find the chance to pull it back as the 3rd and 4th quarter saw N.E.T.N.S build a score of 16 points to 2. All the players had an opportunity at scoring so there was great teamwork all round!

The girls were ecstatic with the win and the team work throughout their game was amazing! The girls were ready then to cheer on the boys.

The boys game was tight in the first quarter as both team battle to score a basket. N.E.T.N.S worked hard at defending their players but the rebounding from Scoil Diarmada was excellent and it was from those rebounds that Scoil Diarmada had second chance opportunities to score.

As the game progressed into the second half, N.E.T.N.S were scrambling at times to mark players and it was with this that Scoil Diarmada found space to attack the basket.

N.E.T.N.S had some wonderful scores and some really nice assists within the game but unfortunately Scoil Diarmada had scored too many points by the third quarter for N.E.T.N.S to pull it back.

Overall both teams showed a huge improvement from the first game and we now look forward to making more progress in the next game.

Many thanks to the parents who kindly offered their time to drive some of the boys and girls to Castledermot. It was great to have extra supporters there also.

Well done 6th class!!

Take a look at both teams in action in Castledermot.
